It’s also the first Pixar movie to focus on people. A gifted archer who, refreshingly, lacks the decolletage Disney typically gives its Princesses Gone Wild, Merida is a free spirit who avoids a trio of suitors by journeying into a forest where something horrible happens, something that forces Merida (inhabited by the musical voice of Kelly Macdonald) to take responsibility for making things right.īecause Pixar has given us such high expectations for unique films such as “Up” and “Wall-E,” the conventional, fairy-tale story of “Brave” is a wee bit disappointing. The heroine of “Brave” is a princess, but the animated comedy/adventure goes to great lengths to assure us she’s not your typical Disney princess.Īlthough her mother constantly nags her about appropriate behavior (“A princess strives for perfection,” “A princess does not chortle”), stubborn Merida is not big on rules.
